Billy Meredith

Billy Meredith, also known as the "Welsh Wizard" and Wales first International Football star playing for both Manchester United and Manchester City, was from Black Park, he played football and cricket on local teams and worked as a pit pony driver at Black Park Colliery from the age of 12. There is also contemporary stardom, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs in homage to their idol designed the team shirt for Manchester United in 2009 based on the iconic original "V" strip design of Billy Meredith 100 years previously, in the year 1909.
